When I share this story of today’s miracle.. maybe you’ll understand why I don’t personally put up donation pages like ‘Give Send Go’ for myself. I have put them up for others, and I fully support the premise! In fact, I donate all the time! But I don’t appeal for donations for myself, because it is my urgent desire to run my ministry as Hudson Taylor and George Muller did.
Plus - it is SO much more exciting (and effective) to let God be your supply.. as you are about to see.
Our front porch roof was leaking.. so we had to have it repaired.
In the last 2 weeks, we got 2 estimates -
One was for $2,200.
The next one was for a bit more than $5,000.
And I thought the first one was high! Haha.
And where I might have normally been in a position to hire the 1st guys, in these last 2 weeks after paying out myriad DMV fees and towing bills from having both my cars towed .. I was scraping the bottom of the barrel.
So I did what any practical homeowner did, I bargained..
First my son did demolition. He knew how to do that. He tore off the roof over the front porch that had been dripping for a while.. the interior boards were soaked.
To his credit that was NO SMALL JOB! The chunks weigh a ton and took brute strength to tear from the structure. Which is why I thought the roofers would reduce the price at all!
(I also like how so many times when I take a photo of my son.. light appeares to be shining on him.. As above and here..
Then GOD took care of the weather.
As much as rain was predicted again and again, Nick and I decreed that it wouldn’t rain in Fayetteville NY till our roof was closed again. It didn’t. Clouds and overcast skies came and went, but not a drop of water.
Instead HE SENT SUNSHINE! Which is atypical for Central New York!
The problem was.. Nick opened the roof.. and it dried out in the abundant sunshine.. but he doesn’t know how to finish a flat roof. He has worked on houses with local contractors.. but this was new and he had to admit to me - “Mom I’m in over my head’.
There’s a lot of nuance to a flat roof.. It has to be done right, or the water sits there and finds its way in through the cracks. The brick wall needs to be scored.. flashing needs to be applied.. an ‘angle’ needs to be developed to run the rain where you want it to go. So with our roof gaping open to the capricious skies.. we set to calling around for pros to finish the job.
Yes.. I could wish he hadn’t started, but the roof was leaking…
It was an opportunity to believe God for a miracle!
(In this area we would need a miracle.. Decent contractors are few and far between and when we called around to small-time roofers to see if someone would finish the job.. they never returned our calls.)
Finally we bit the bullet and yesterday, July 4th, we called the guys who’d given us the lower $2,200 quote, told them, ‘Hey, we did all the demolition, and it’s ready to be closed’,.. Would you do that for us? And how much?
They said “$1,800 + materials.” ..Still over our heads.
We asked if they would consider closing the roof for $1,200, and we would buy all the materials. (I get a military discount at Home Depot).
To my surprise they agreed..
The materials turned out to be about $700.! Which, thank God, was exactly what Nick’s dad gave me yesterday from his day job! So at least we had the materials.. haha.
We asked when they could do the job. (Since sooner or later it’s gunna rain.)
They said ‘TOMORROW’.
I’m like GREAT! WOOHOO!
We counted our mutual accounts.. and came up with less than $400. So I saw it as ‘We only have to raise about $800….” ! :>} ) (In one day..)
The funny thing is.. we DO Have receipts expected.. Nicks dad just finished a mural.. (Though we’re still waiting to get paid).. I have B&B guests coming.. but no checks arrived today .. A refund of nearly $150 from a recent truck rental supposed to drop into my account.. still didn’t show.. Nick - my chip off the old block entrepreneur.. sells things online.. 3 guys bid on a product he had listed.. but ALL THREE bugged out. An old friend, was even trying to ZELLE me his room fee in the Inn for the upcoming Bible class.. and ZELLE refused to send it.. All very Odd..
Nick is like.. ‘Mom, we don’t have $12,000. We really should wait till we have enough to pay them.” A very reasonable guy. He just doesn’t know the Lord like I do.. yet.
I just asked the Lord as David did - ‘Shall we pursue?’
His answer was the same..
“Pursue: for thou shalt surely overtake them, and without fail recover all.” I Samuel 30:8
I told Nick to hire them. I knew the Lord would supply..
He was nervous when he complied,.
and when they arrived this morning at 9am.. he was still nervous..
I love showing my son what God can do. By late morning the guys were hot and heavy at it.. drilling, cutting, hammering.. well into the work that we needed to pay for today..
At 12 noon the phone started ringing.. I took FOUR reservations in one day, including one for a whole house rental, and 1 room for 2 guests.. 2 rooms for 4 guests. Calls were coming for dates as far away as NEXT MAY! (Syracuse U. graduation.) Receipts were falling off the tree like apples in a high wind.
At some point I got the reservation card out for the 6 people that would be arriving today and discovered..
They still had a balance to pay for their 3 rooms! I’d forgotten all about it!
Late this afternoon on my prayer walk, I spoke with my youngest sister.. (She’s in a LOT of pain, and is slated for more surgery, and lately has started to call me for prayer.. A first, in practically her 62 years!) She called me the other day and I prayed for her and something absolutely remarkable happened.. (For another post) So here she was calling me again, eagerly, and actually - for the first time in her life - starting to listen’.1
She asked me ‘How was your day?’
So I told her about the roofers.. and the payment debacle.. I got to the punch line saying,.. “We needed to come up with a total of $1200 in one day to pay them. And asked her - “Guess how much we wound up with before they left?”.. She said ‘$1200!”
I said ‘$1,600!’
That was how much we wound up with before the day was over. So I also bought chocolates for our current guests! :>)
BTW.. before the roofers left, I asked them about their company name.. ‘Alpha and Omega Roofers’.. Yes… They named their company after Jesus Christ.!
Its SO WONDERFUL when people start to listen.. For SIXTY PLUS YEARS my own siblings have refused to listen to me about the things of God. At this point, FOUR of them are in wheelchairs, on medications and public disability.. BUT LATELY my youngest sister is so desperate she is starting to listen to me.. And she has already has a miracle from my prayer of 2 days ago. I just want to say the Church would CHANGE THE WORLD if it would grasp the fact that Christ left us with power to use.. precisely to HELP OTHERS.
What a beautiful testimony of God's provisions. I have to always remember that God is still the Almighty God even when my prayers are not answered.
My daughter's death rocked my faith in miracles. We had churches praying for Danielle's healing from the Hamptons, up and down the eastern sea board, South America, India, Africa, England, and Caribbean. It's a trying time for me but, I will never stop believing in Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Very wonderful testimony! Alpha and Omega! The Beginning and The End! 🙌 All we need! What icing on the cake!
