I never started a Substack to debate doctrine. Paul said such time spent is a waste of time, and a study in vanity.
But avoid foolish questions, and genealogies, and contentions,
and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain. Titus 3:9
he added that
‘the Kingdom of God is NOT a matter of talk but of POWER..’ I Corinthians 4:20
I often wonder what the debaters think of that verse..
I prefer to do rather than to discuss. And many might testify of me, that I DO heal the sick, cast out demons, counsel the brokenhearted, and preach/teach the Gospel. I make it my business to try to imitate Jesus; even as I’m still learning how.
TORBEN SONDERGAARD
By that token, I have a new hero. I’m so impressed with this minister of the Gospel, his will be the first Bible class I’ve taken in 48 years. Why? Because he is doing what Jesus did. He is boldly and selflessly walking in power, in what can only be called a 1st Century Church redux.
When Torben Sondergaard was a new Christian and started to go to church, he did the routine, get up on Sunday morning, dress nicely, go to church, sit down, listen for 2 hours, go home; and forget what you heard. Rinse; wash; repeat.
He thought there had to be more to it than that. But in 99.999% of US churches.. that’s it. The rest of his epiphany is told in this remarkable film. THE LAST REFORMATION - that I seriously recommend you watch.
Sondergaard’s ministry is not about ‘eschatology’ (I’ve never heard him use the word) It IS all about the baptism of the holy spirit, and the ‘power’ that follows the baptism , and putting it to good use. More on him in a moment.
What’s the alternative.. ?
Debating doctrine.
I hear words used by debators like ‘eschatology’ and ‘dispensationalism’, and pre-trib, mid-trib, and post-trib raptures.. words I never heard Jesus use. And words that to the best of my knowledge never got anyone saved, or drew them to Christ. You will NOT interest a Jew, or a Muslim in Jesus by debating doctrine.. Guaranteed. They have their own books. They need to see POWER in manifestation; Same deal in Jesus’ day as ours.
The debate about ‘Is it God’s will to heal?’ Really? You don’t know?
On that point, I got hung up on by a gal who needs healing but doesn’t want it. (Though she had a doctor’s appointment set up for the next day). She told me that God “allowed her sickness”, that “It was for His glory”.
Well,.. let’s take a look at her doctrine..
Is it a misunderstanding of John 11:4?
When Jesus heard that, he said,
This SICKNESS is not unto death, but for the GLORY of God,
that the Son of God might be GLORIFIED thereby.’ John 11:4
OK. But if it were Lazarus’ ‘sickness’ that GLORIFIED God or the Son of God - then why on earth did Jesus heal him?
if it was Lazarus’ ‘sickness’ that GLORIFIED God - then why on earth did Jesus heal him?
Because it was the act of healing him that glorified His Father in Heaven. Not the man’s sickness. For heaven’s sakes friend, sickness is an ugly thing. It gives God no glory, nor did Jesus ever leave *anyone in that state (*that came to him for healing)!
The ‘I glorify God with my suffering’ folk remind me of the Pharisees.
Who, when they’d fasted, would wear LOOONG faces and show their suffering to the onlookers. Was God glorified?
Is He impressed when a man prefers to suffer rather than get healed? I only know that Jesus did not appear to be very impressed with the Pharisees suffering - and said:
Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.’ Matthew 6:16
“They have their reward..” In other words, they got their pats on the back and sympathy from the church. Done.
SABBATH - the ‘to do or not to do’ debate
Some saints think that the Church is supposed to observe the Sabbath. And my question to anyone who thinks so is - WHY?
WHY ON EARTH SHOULD THE CHURCH DO WHAT JESUS DIDN’T DO?
If JESUS broke the sabbath (Matthew 12, Luke 13 and 14) and never displeased God, what makes anyone think that WE have to keep it in order to PLEASE God ??
“This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” Matthew 3:17
If the ONLY records about the Sabbath in the Gospels are when Jesus decried the hypocrisy of those who demanded it be observed, why should WE observe it?
‘The Lord then answered him, and said, Thou hypocrite, doth not each one of you on the sabbath loose his ox or his ass from the stall, and lead him away to watering?’ Luke 13:15
Is observing the Sabbath today not just more ‘virtue signaling’, like the ‘fasting Pharisees’? Let’s look at it logically..
Jesus broke the Sabbath in order to do 2 things:
HEAL a man
DEMONSTRATE that HE was Lord of the Sabbath - That, the Sabbath with his appearing - had become moot.
We find NO reference to Jesus EVER observing the sabbath in the Gospel records.
Did he ever in his life observe the sabbath - YES. The same way we know he fulfilled the rites of water baptism and circumcision, ONCE and FOR ALL of us. We don’t have to do these things any more. It is finished. The ritual is over and done with.
300+ laws in the ‘LAW’
BTW, The “LAW’ that some Christians see fit to follow, contains over THREE HUNDRED rules - which they are also obliged to observe; for if they obey ‘part of the Law’, they are held accountable for ALL of the Law..
But what saith the Scripture about such as these? The Apostle Paul taught that they make Christ to have suffered and died for nothing!
‘I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.’ Galatians 2:21
JESUS TRAINING DISCIPLES
When Jesus was training his disciples, a discussion of 'making sure they were circumcized or obeyed the sabbath, never once arose. Never. His objective with them was to teach them to heal the sick, cast out demons, and preach the Gospel of Repentance - for ‘the Kingdom was at hand.’
Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority OVER DEVILS and to CURE DISEASES Luke 9:1
‘After these things the Lord appointed other seventy ALSO,
2 Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the LABORERS are few: Luke 10:1,2
When the 70 returned, they didn’t report back that they’d circumsized anyone.
They didn’t report on how they’d all kept the sabbath faithfully..
RATHER..
THEY SAID.. “Lord! Even the devils are subject to us through thy name.!”
So we know what they were occupied doing.
BUT… AND WHAT IF someone had a demon, but they couldn’t cast him out.. because.. it was Sunday….. OMG.!
Do you not see the foolishness of this debate over the Sabbath.
The Kingdom of God is not about ceremonial law, or holy days, or how often we fasted, or what part of the tribulation Jesus will return in..
It’s about all of us hitting the streets and laying hands on the sick that they recover, and casting demons out of the demon afflicted and possessed, and baptizing disciples everywhere we find someone willing..
That’s what Sondergaard is doing. Hear him.. THE LAST REFORMATION
Let’s see what you think.
Amen mss Victoria. most churches today are cold and dead. I rarely see anyone healed. they may get hands laid on them, the may get anointed with oil and they may even receive the prayer of faith, BUT........ Sunday rituals! while most of the congregation sleeps in laullyby land, the sick and needy are neglected. I for one am tired of it. Will Jesus find faith upon the earth at his returning?
Looking forward to watching it!
